About the Owners
Goins Waste Oil is now run by Mr. and Mrs. Goins’ son, daughters, and grandchildren. Gordon Goins, Jr. (Buddy) President, Joyce Gladney Vice President, and Sheila Stiles Secretary and Treasurer.
The History of Goins Waste Oil Company
In the late 1940’s, the city of Chattanooga was not the lovely town you see before you today. In fact, it was ranked one of the dirtiest cities in the entire United States. But, that didn’t stop Gordon Goins from having an ambitious business mind. He was working for Chevrolet when a man from Dixie Service Company came in with an opportunity. He was there in an attempt to get the waste oil service of Chevrolet, when explained his business to Gordon. The man then offered Gordon a job, to which he accepted.
Dixie Service Company had 7 trucks on the road at the time of Gordons’ hire. Mr. Goins began running routes for the company and was very successful. He acquired several new clients and was making a name for himself in the environmental industry. After a few years of working for Dixie, Gordons’ truck was the only one left out of the fleet of seven. The owner decided to make Gordon an offer to own the business.
Now, the offer that he presented Mr. Goins with was extremely appealing. He stated that if Gordon would assist him and his family in a move to California, then he could have the business, truck and client list included. This was just what Mr. Goins was looking for. He took the deal, not knowing that over a half a century later, the business would turn into one of the most trusted and oldest names in the environmental industry.
In 1952, the name was changed from Dixie Service Company, to Goins Waste Oil Company. Mr. Goins began building his cliental base. This included heavy contracts which included the Chattanooga branch of Norfolk Southern Railway, a few rock quarries, and several big corporations in and surrounding the Chattanooga area. With these large contracts on top of the already large individual client list, the business was really taking off.
Throughout the coming years Gordon brought on a few family members to assist. Among those members was Joyce his daughter and her husband Richard Gladney, better known as “Peanut”. They began branching out over east and middle Tennessee, as well as north and middle Georgia. Mr. Goins always believed in family. In fact, that’s what drove him to succeed in his business. So, it was natural of Gordon to want to hire family as well as close friends. That is how Goins Waste Oil has been run ever since.
Juanita, Gordon’s wife, passed in the year 2000, the same year Gordon’s youngest son, Gordon Goins Jr “Buddy”, assumed position of President at Goins Waste Oil Company. A few years later in 2003, Gordon Goins Sr. passed away leaving his legacy behind to three children, Joyce, Sheila, and Gordon Jr.
Gordon Goins stuck to his Christian beliefs and tight family morals which gained his clients respect. In 2004 the company expanded and then expanded once again in 2012. The client list that started with just a few Chattanooga businesses has grown well into the thousands. The single truck that Gordon began with is now a fleet of street trucks, tankers, and even more. Gordon Goins started out by himself, now the company hosts a team of 15 employees. The company that was once run with one pump and one tank in the back of Gordon’s small residence is now an actual processing plant with a compacity of well over 80,000 gallons.
The Christian beliefs and family values that Gordon was so passionate about still hold strong within the company today. The client list has grown as well as the respect from our clients. We still believe to treat the customer as we want to be treated. We still help when needed, even when it doesn’t benefit us directly. The family is close and that helps us to succeed in our day to day activities. We have been in business for nearly 70 years now and we are the oldest known used oil recycling business in the United States. It’s strange to think all this started by lending a hand to a family in need. But, then again, that value is still what we here at Goins Waste Oil, are all about today.
